India's largest turmeric producing state with Nizamabad district hosting Asia's biggest turmeric trading market (mandi). Flat fertile plains with black cotton soil yield large, uniform bulb-type rhizomes with consistent curcumin content. Preferred by commodity traders and export houses.

Andhra Pradesh's Guntur and Krishna districts produce high-quality turmeric on fertile alluvial and red loamy soils. The state is a major supplier to domestic spice processors and EU/Middle East export markets. FPOs are well-organised with good ICS documentation.

Erode is globally called the "Turmeric City" — a major trading and processing hub. Tamil Nadu's red laterite soils produce bright-coloured finger-type turmeric with good oleoresin content, preferred for colour extraction and cosmetic applications. BSR-1 is a high-yielding certified variety.

Kandhamal district's "Haladi" (turmeric) is GI-tagged — a recognition of its unique heritage grown by tribal communities on laterite hill soils. Cultivated without any external inputs for generations, Kandhamal Haladi commands premium pricing in natural and organic markets nationally and globally.

Meghalaya's Jaintia Hills produce the world-renowned Lakadong turmeric — holding the highest known curcumin content (7–12%) of any naturally cultivated variety. Grown at 1,200–1,500m altitude by indigenous Jaintia communities using ancestral techniques. Deeply valued by the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and premium food industries worldwide.

Sangli district is home to India's most internationally recognised turmeric variety — Rajapore. Bright golden-yellow colour, distinctive aroma, and consistent quality have made Sangli turmeric a benchmark in global spice trade. FPOs here have strong export connections to the Middle East and Europe.

Kerala's Alleppey finger turmeric is internationally traded for pharmaceutical curcumin extraction. Finger-type rhizomes with deep colour and high curcumin (5–7%) are preferred by nutraceutical manufacturers in the USA, Germany, and Japan. PGS-certified FPOs maintain excellent ICS records.

Gujarat's Saurashtra region grows the indigenous "Desi" turmeric variety alongside high-curcumin Lakadong. Cluster-based farming with strong FPO structures and ICS systems make Gujarat a model state for the organic turmeric movement. Gir cow-based farming practices are increasingly adopted.

Karnataka's western ghats coffee belt also produces excellent quality turmeric in intercropped systems. The shaded growing conditions and rich forest soil give the turmeric a distinctive earthy depth. Kodagu district turmeric is particularly valued in premium spice markets.

West Bengal's alluvial plains in Nadia and Murshidabad produce turmeric with a mild earthy flavour preferred in Bengali cooking. Local varieties like Suvarnaprabha are well-adapted to the humid subtropical climate. Increasing FPO formation is helping improve organic certification rates.

Assam bridges the high-curcumin Northeast turmeric varieties with the mainstream market. Cachar district produces turmeric that benefits from the same climatic conditions as Meghalaya's premium varieties. Tea garden intercropping is a unique practice that gives Assam turmeric its distinctive character.

Manipur's hill communities have cultivated indigenous turmeric varieties including the locally unique Umorok variety for generations. The hilly terrain with deep organic matter creates naturally chemical-free growing conditions. Traditional knowledge preservation and FPO support are unlocking premium market access.
